We passionately believe in the importance of the hygienists' role in helping patients obtain the best possible oral health & preventing gum disease & tooth decay.
Hygienists are specifically trained in the removal of plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and below the gum line.
Plaque can cause gum disease and tooth decay and only takes a day or two to build up on the tooth. High levels of plaque increase your risk of gum disease, tooth loss and acidic attack on the tooth.
We aim to help you keep your plaque levels low. This, in turn, will help prevent avoidable dental disease (gum disease and tooth decay) with costly treatments.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is a condition where the gums become swollen, sore or infected. A symptom might be that the gums bleed, or the patient may experience bad breath. If left untreated Periodontitis can develop.
What is periodontitis?
‘Perio’ disease is a condition that affects the tissues that support and hold teeth in place. If left untreated, spaces can open between gum and teeth and the teeth can become loose and eventually fall out.
Studies have also shown a link between poor oral health (associated with plaque build-up) and conditions such as heart and lung disease.
Hygienists play a vital role within the dental team, aiding you in achieving good oral health by highlighting areas of concern and demonstrating the correct home care necessary to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Each appointment varies between patients. The appointment includes a visual check for oral cancer plus treatment tailored to meet your individual needs.
